Cloud is an endangered species in Egypt in August. Weather station measurements show sunshine on 92 percent of the daylight hours and the cloud that occurs is typically a struggling cumulus that will dissipate with the oncoming lunar shadow or a wispy transparent cirrus. Afternoon temperatures are high, however, averaging 42°C (107°F) in early August, so TravelQuest’s luxury eclipse site will provide easy access to air conditioning and refreshments. With so much of the eclipse track lying along and over the Sahara Desert, airborne dust is a common feature of North African skies, but seldom thick enough to do more than put a thin veil across the Sun.  For an all-but-guaranteed eclipse, Egypt is the place to be.

Today, we set out to explore Cairo, Egypt's historic capital situated along the banks of the Nile. The journey begins at the Grand Egyptian Museum, home to the illustrious treasures of Tutankhamun's burial site, where the marvels of antiquity await. From there, we’ll ascend to the Citadel, offering sweeping panoramic views of the sprawling cityscape, and visit the stunning Alabaster Mosque, a masterpiece of architectural grandeur. As the day continues, we’ll explore the bustling Khan-el-Khalili bazaar, where the air is filled with the scent of spices and perfumes, and you'll find a wide selection of gold, silver, and brass items.

Tonight, you’ll have the exceptional opportunity to attend the inaugural lecture of the tour, delivered by Dr. Zahi Hawass, the world-renowned Egyptian archaeologist. Dr. Hawass is celebrated for his extensive contributions to the field of Egyptology, including groundbreaking discoveries and excavations in sites such as the Valley of the Kings and the Giza Plateau. His work has significantly advanced our understanding of ancient Egyptian history and culture. After an early breakfast, we’ll fly to Luxor and travel to the Valley of the Kings, where the remains of ancient pharaohs (both renowned and barely known) are entombed in more than 60 burial chambers carved into the desert cliffs. Elaborately decorated and filled with treasures intended for the afterlife, the royal tombs offer rich insights into Egyptian beliefs about death and the journey beyond – though regrettably, only a handful escaped the notice of grave robbers over the centuries. Our explorations around Luxor also take you to the mortuary temple of Hatshepsut, Egypt’s sole female ruler, whose legacy is celebrated in this spectacular architectural monument. The final highlight of a memorable day is the Colossi of Memnon, a pair of massive stone statues of pharaoh Amenhotep III overlooking the remains of a temple long ago swept away in the Nile’s annual flooding. Our day ends at the magnificent Temple of Karnak, a vast complex dedicated to the deity Amun-Ra. Walking among its towering columns as our guides decipher elaborate hieroglyphs, you can’t help but feel awestruck by the ingenuity and ambition of its ancient builders. And once evening falls, we come together for the eclipse briefing, complete with the crucial weather update for tomorrow’s big event!

This morning, as the sun begins its ascent, we head into the desert where you'll find yourself at a carefully selected vantage point, ready to witness the "Eclipse of the Century.” The stark drop in temperature will transform the arid heat into a refreshing coolness, and the changing light will cast a serene, otherworldly glow over the surroundings. Then settle in to experience approximately 6 minutes and 22 seconds of totality - the longest duration of the century! Then after lunch, join our Egyptologist guide for a tour of the magnificent Luxor Temple at sunset.

Then later tonight, you’ll have the opportunity to attend a lecture by the esteemed Egyptologist Dr. Mostafa Waziri. Dr. Waziri is a distinguished Egyptian archaeologist and the Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities. Renowned for his significant contributions to the field, he has led numerous important excavations, including those in the Saqqara necropolis, where he uncovered the extraordinary cache of mummies. His expertise and insights into ancient Egyptian history and archaeology have been instrumental in advancing our understanding of Egypt's rich cultural heritage. During this lecture, Dr. Waziri will share his latest discoveries and offer a deep dive into the archaeological wonders of Egypt.

By midday, we'll set sail towards Kom Ombo, where we will explore the ancient temples dedicated to Sobek, the crocodile god, and Horus, the falcon-headed deity whose eyes symbolize the Sun and the Moon. Following our visit to these remarkable sites, we’ll savor a sunset dinner onboard, as our ship gracefully cruises southward towards Edfu.

Our excursions today begin with a visit to the impressive Aswan High Dam, which was the world's highest earthen embankment dam when completed in 1970. Your Nile journey continues aboard a motor launch as we explore Agilkia Island and the relocated Philae Temple complex, dedicated to the goddess Isis. Today will also include a felucca ride, a traditional Egyptian sailboat, for a scenic exploration around Aswan. As the boat glides along the Nile, you’ll encounter the historic Elephantine Island, with its ancient ruins, and Kitchener’s Island, renowned for its lush botanical gardens. The journey also offers stunning views of the Aga Khan Mausoleum, perched elegantly on the western riverbanks.

This morning we take an early flight from Aswan to visit the famed Abu Simbel temple. In 1257 BCE, Pharaoh Ramses II (1279-13 BCE) had two temples carved out of solid rock at a site on the west bank of the Nile south of Aswan in the land of Nubia, known today as Abu Simbel. Long before Ramses II, the site had been sacred to Hathor of Absek. The temple built by Ramses, however, was dedicated to the sun gods Amun-Ra and Ra-Horakhte. Because of their remote location near the Sudanese border in southern Egypt, the temples were unknown until their rediscovery in 1813. They were first explored in 1817 by the Egyptologist Giovanni Battista Belzoni. Perhaps (after the Giza pyramids) the great temple of Abu Simbel presents the most familiar image of ancient Egypt to the modern traveler. When the conservation efforts to preserve the temple from the soon-to-be-built High Aswan Dam and its rising waters began in the 1960s, images of the colossal statues filled newspapers and books. The temples were dismantled and relocated in 1968 on the desert plateau, 200 feet (61 m) above and 600 feet (183 m) west of their original location. Today, Abu Simbel lies south of Aswan on the western bank of the Nile, 180 miles (290 km) south of the First Cataract in what was Nubia. In the afternoon we catch a flight back to Cairo and enjoy the remainder of the evening at leisure.

Today, early in the morning while the Giza Plateau remains closed to the general public, TravelQuest has arranged privileged access to some of the most iconic and well-preserved monuments of ancient Egypt. Your visit will begin with a tour of the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the only remaining wonder of the original Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. You’ll also explore two additional chambers—the Queen's Chamber and the Subterranean Chamber— areas that are typically off-limits to most visitors.

Then, instead of observing the Sphinx from afar, our special access enables us to bypass the usual barriers and position you directly in front of this colossal monument, offering a truly immersive experience. You will then have the unique opportunity to attend the final lecture of the tour, presented once again by the distinguished Dr. Zahi Hawass, the acclaimed Egyptian archaeologist. Known as the modern-day ‘Indiana Jones,’ Dr. Hawass will share fascinating insights into the enigmatic mysteries of the Sphinx, providing an exclusive perspective from between its massive paws.


Later, our exploration will take us to Memphis, which was once the capital of ancient Egypt and a vibrant cultural and political hub, famed for its grand temples and colossal statues, including the iconic statue of Ramses II. We will also visit Saqqara, the extensive necropolis of Memphis, renowned for its vast burial grounds and the Step Pyramid of Djoser, the oldest known pyramid in Egypt. In the evening, we’ll enjoy the farewell dinner to celebrate our unforgettable journey and take a moment to say our goodbyes.

This morning, we will journey to Jerash, an ancient Roman city celebrated for its remarkably preserved ruins. We will delve into the archaeological site, discovering its grand colonnaded street, temples, theaters, and other historic treasures. We will then take a city tour of Amman visiting sites such as the Amman Citadel, King Abdullah I Mosque, Rainbow Street, Umayyad Desert Castles, Roman Amphitheater, and Darat al Funun and conclude with the bustling markets.

Day 3 - Amman / Madaba / Jordan River / Petra

This morning, we will proceed to Madaba, famous for its renowned mosaic map of the Holy Land. Our visit will include St. George's Church, where we can admire this ancient mosaic. From there, we will continue to Mount Nebo, the place where Moses is said to have seen the Promised Land. You’ll enjoy panoramic views of the Jordan Valley and visit the Moses Memorial Church.

Afterwards, we’ll continue our journey to Bethany, identified by archaeologists as the place where John the Baptist once resided. Here, we will also explore the Jordan River, the site of Jesus Christ's baptism, located on the eastern bank of the Jordan River. You will take in the biblical landscape and sacred significance of this place. Finally, we will travel south along the Dead Sea, to Petra, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Pricing & Terms

Rates are quoted per person in US dollars, based on double occupancy.  Your tour package must include both land and cruise components, which are priced separately. Prices are based on projected rates and will not be finalized until 2026. TravelQuest reserves the right to increase or decrease published prices at that time. All cancellation penalties, terms and conditions as listed below will remain in effect from the time of the initial deposit.

Payments & Terms

  • An advance payment of $1,400 USD per person, along with the completed reservation form, are required to secure your reservation
  • A second advance payment of $1,800 USD per person is due by March 21, 2025
  • A third advance payment of $2,500 USD per person is due by November 4, 2025
  • A fourth advance payment of $3,800 USD per person is due by June 16, 2026
  • Final payment is due January 15, 2027
  • Payments can be made by check, bank wire transfer or credit card (with an additional 3.5% processing fee)

Cancellation Terms

  • Cancellations must be made in writing via email, fax or mail
  • All advance payments, less a $500 USD per person cancellation fee, are refundable until March 21, 2025
  • Cancellations made between March 22, 2025 and November 3, 2025 will incur a $1,800 per person fee
  • Cancellations made between November 4, 2025 and June 15, 2026 will incur a $3,800 per person fee
  • Cancellations made between June 16, 2026 and January 14, 2027 will incur a $4,500 per person fee
  • All payments become non-refundable after final payment, January 15, 2027 
  • Airline cancellation terms & conditions are the responsibility of the traveler

TRAVELER HEALTH

At TravelQuest we want to be sure you find the trip that best suits your interests and level of fitness. Prior to making a booking, it is the responsibility of each traveler to thoroughly read the itinerary, and to acquire and understand all pertinent medical advice to determine whether they are in an appropriate state of physical health to undertake the trip. At a minimum, participants must be able to climb into and out of buses, vans and trains without assistance, to carry their own luggage, and to generally keep up with the pace of the trip. If you have any questions about your trip’s itinerary or its level of difficulty, please contact us prior to booking.

TRAVEL INSURANCE

Travel insurance protects you from unexpected “what ifs”: What if your bags go missing? What if you must cancel? What if you need medical assistance? TravelQuest highly recommends that you purchase a travel protection plan to help secure you and your trip investment against the unexpected. You can purchase this insurance on your own or contact our friends at Travelex, who are familiar with our trips and offer a selection of coverage options to suit your needs. To be eligible for the waiver of pre-existing medical condition exclusion, Travelex plans must be purchased within 15 days from the time you make your initial deposit to TravelQuest. ALL Travelex policies must be purchased at least 14 days prior to your departure date.
