The 2028 total eclipse comes at the sunniest (and driest) time of year in Queensland. Weather stations along the eclipse track boast an average of 17-19 days in the month with sunny skies; only 2-5 days are cloudy and the rest are partly cloudy. Satellite measurements of early afternoon cloud cover at TravelQuest’s eclipse-viewing site confirm the region’s sunny nature with an average frequency of sunny or mostly sunny skies on 75 to 80 percent of July afternoons, a value that closely matches the ground-level observations.
But, bring a warm coat. It’s winter in Australia and so temperatures are on the cool side. Average daily highs are pleasant—in the low 20s (71°F)—but morning lows tend to be chilly, around 7°C (45°F) though below-freezing temperatures are very rare. Even July’s winds are cooperating for the eclipse: the month has the second-lowest average winds of the year. All-in-all, with over four minutes of totality, Queensland is promising a successful eclipse experience.
