So what better place to witness the total solar eclipse of August 2026 than in the heart of Spain, from your unique vantage point on a sunny plateau ringed by mountains and dotted with medieval towns?

We visit some of Spain’s most celebrated cities – Madrid, Segovia, Burgos, Valladolid – while also winding through less-known regions to explore aspects of this fascinating country that mainstream tours miss. Along the Basque Coast on the Bay of Biscay, we tour the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, architect Frank Gehry’s modern masterpiece. And on August 12, 2026, our select group views the total eclipse of the Sun from a site in rural Castilla that our astronomers believe is most likely to offer unobstructed views during the brief but unforgettable sunset sequence.

August 2026 Spain Total Eclipse

The trajectory of this total eclipse – beginning in northern Russia, passing over the North Pole and touching Iceland before descending across the North Atlantic — is likely to be obscured in many places by heavy cloud. Fortunately, as it sinks toward a conclusion at sunset, the path encounters more heartening weather on the Iberian Peninsula. In August, Spain is mainly a land of sunshine and warm temperatures, offering the best prospects for a cloud-free eclipse of any location along the Moon’s path. Twenty years of satellite observations at this time of year show that much of the country has an average daytime cloud cover of around 40 percent. 

Completely sunny days are common in Spain during the late summer. Still, in choosing TravelQuest’s observation site we’ve avoided areas that are prone to afternoon cloud buildups to ensure a clear sight line to the setting sun. We’ll also be far enough inland to avoid the coastal cloud, in a viewing spot tucked behind mountains that impede incoming weather systems. Although it will be a short eclipse at 1 m 45s, its ghostly appearance above the sunset horizon, over a generally sunlit landscape, will add a special drama to the spectacle.

Today begins with a visit to nearby El Escorial, a former monastery and royal residence – in both dimensions a testament to Spain’s richly complex history. From the stunning library to the fascinating private apartments of Philip II, this is an unforgettable place. After lunch on your own in the old city, we make our way to the small city of Segovia which is filled with surprises, from its Roman aqueduct (among the best preserved in the ancient Empire), to its impressive gothic cathedral, to its castle torn from the pages of a children’s storybook. Add in a wealth of fine restaurants and lively bars, and it’s no wonder Segovia is such a favorite stop for travelers.

It was in the nearby royal palace, the Palacio de Pimentel, that King Philip II of Spain was born in 1527. You can still feel the spirit of that imperial era as we spend time exploring this vibrant city, rich in art and architecture.  In historic Valladolid, capital of the province that shares its name, we’ll enjoy lunch in one of the many restaurants and tapas bars around the pretty main square. We also visit a winery that many consider the best in the famed Ribera del Duero wine-growing region. As we follow the Douro River, we see more of the spectacular stone castles that give Castilla its name before carrying on to our final destination for today: Burgos.

Setting out from Burgos, Castilla’s wonderfully well-preserved medieval capital, we head to nearby Atapuerca, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000 after archaeologists throughout the previous century gradually unearthed evidence of the earliest hominid settlement in Western Europe. You have a unique opportunity to see these discoveries up close as we talk to some of the experts whose work has transformed our understanding of how human life evolved on the continent. Returning to Burgos in late afternoon, enjoy dinner at the hotel and then join us in the salon for our TravelQuest astronomer’s briefing on tomorrow’s eclipse.

The total solar eclipse is today’s centerpiece, but because it comes late in the day, you also have time to explore more landmarks of medieval architecture. A highlight is the breathtaking monastery of Silos, where the monks’ performance of Gregorian chants helps set an appropriately contemplative mood ahead of the astronomical wonder we’ll experience at sunset.

Departing Burgos, we enter La Rioja in the ancient kingdom of Castilla, Spain’s smallest region and home to many of the country’s most renowned wines. You can sample some excellent vintages during our visit to a traditional winery.  Among the villages dotting this less-traveled route is Frias, which boasts a medieval castle, an impressive 12th-century bridge, quaint houses hanging over the hillside streets – and a population of 200 residents who proudly protect their patrimony while sharing it with visitors. As we continue north passing through sweeping grainfields of the central plateau, through the green coastal landscapes, we are greeted by the grandeur of San Sebastián’s Belle Époque architecture and the storied history of this seaside promenade.

Leaving San Sebastian, we head further down the coast to another hidden gem, Zarautz, where we’re welcomed at a local winery by members of the Basque family that has created distinctive Txakoli wines here for generations.  We continue our journey westward along a coastline dotted with fascinating fishing villages – including Getaria, birthplace of Juan Sebastián Elcano, the first sailor to circumnavigate the globe in 1522 (as part of Magellan’s historic expedition). After a superb seafood meal overlooking the old port, we continue to Bilbao, a magnet for admirers of contemporary architecture. Our walking tour of the old city culminates in a visit to the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, the masterpiece of Canadian-born U.S. architect Frank Gehry. A global landmark, this museum of modern art is as much a sculpture as a building, with a titanium-sheathed exterior in which (in Gehry’s words) “the randomness of the curves is designed to catch the light.”  Then in the evening, join us for a farewell dinner as we toast each other’s good company and celebrate our memorable Spanish journey together.

August 16 - August 23, 2026

After your Spain Total Eclipse excursion, take a voyage through medieval villages, sample wine and explore prehistoric cave art dating back tens of thousands of years. This exclusive experience will take you on an unforgettable journey as we discover the architecture of villages, churches & cathedrals, and trek underground to a half dozen prehistoric caves including four listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Day 1 – Bilbao: Altamira & Tito Bustillo caves

Today, we head to the Altamira Neo Cave, a modern, carefully reconstructed replica of the original Altamira Cave, famous for its prehistoric rock art. Located in Spain's Cantabria region, the Neo Cave offers a chance to experience the awe-inspiring paintings and engravings of bison and other animals that date back over 36,000 years. This replica allows guests to explore the intricate artwork without damaging the delicate original site. The Altamira Cave itself is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is considered one of the most important and well-preserved examples of Paleolithic cave art, providing a fascinating glimpse into the artistic expression and spiritual life of early humans.

Tito Bustillo Cave: Situated in Asturias, Spain, the Tito Bustillo Cave is another extraordinary prehistoric site, famous for its complex cave paintings and engravings that are estimated to be around 14,000 to 25,000 years old. The cave’s artwork depicts various animals such as horses, bison, and deer, as well as abstract symbols, offering valuable insight into the lives of ancient hunters and gatherers. Tito Bustillo is also home to some of the earliest known depictions of human figures in European cave art. This site, along with its surrounding archaeological significance, is part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed "Cave Art of the Iberian Peninsula."

Day 2 – Travel to Lourdes & Saint-Etienne de Cahors

As we begin our journey to Lourdes, a small town nestled in the foothills of the Pyrenees in southwestern France, we visit one of the most significant pilgrimage destinations for Roman Catholics. Lourdes gained worldwide fame in 1858 when a young peasant girl, Bernadette Soubirous, reported a series of apparitions of the Virgin Mary in a grotto near the town. These visions led to the creation of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, which has since become a major site of religious devotion, drawing millions of pilgrims each year.

Day 3 – Cave of Niaux

The Cave of Niaux is one of the most famous prehistoric sites in France, renowned for its stunning and well-preserved Paleolithic cave paintings. Located in the foothills of the Pyrenees, near the village of Niaux in the Ariège region, this cave dates back around 14,000 years to the Upper Paleolithic period. You will be transported back in time as you walk through its narrow passageways, marveling at the incredible artwork that adorns its walls, especially the depictions of bison, horses, and ibex, created by early humans.

The artwork in Niaux is notable for its remarkable level of detail and the use of natural pigments. Some of the most striking images are found in the "Salon Noir," a large chamber where the most complex and vivid drawings are displayed. The cave's remote location has helped preserve the art from the ravages of time.

Day 4 – Saint-Étienne de Cahors

Today, we begin with a visit to the Saint-Étienne de Cahors Cathedral, a remarkable masterpiece of Gothic architecture, nestled in the heart of Cahors, a charming town in southwestern France's Occitanie region. Dating back to the 12th century, the cathedral is renowned for its remarkable Romanesque and Gothic features, including its unique double- arched nave and beautiful stained-glass windows. One of the cathedral's most striking features is its large, curved stone vault — the largest of its kind in France — and its iconic bell tower, which rises dramatically over the town.

Just a short drive from Cahors, Pech Merle Cave offers a fascinating glimpse into the distant past, where prehistoric humans left behind remarkable paintings and engravings. The cave, which has been inhabited for over 25,000 years, is famous for its ancient artwork, which includes representations of animals like bison, horses, and mammoths, as well as mysterious human handprints. The cave's walls are adorned with vivid, well-preserved images created using natural pigments, showcasing the advanced artistic abilities of our early ancestors.

Day 5 – Lascaux IX

Today we travel to Sarlat La Caneda to visit the Lascaux IV: The International Centre for Cave Art, a cutting-edge facility dedicated to preserving and showcasing the world-renowned Lascaux Caves in southwestern France. Discovered in 1940, the original caves contain some of the most remarkable prehistoric art, with intricate paintings of animals such as bison, horses, and deer, dating back around 17,000 years to the Magdalenian period. The Lascaux IV Centre, opened in 2016, offers a faithful replica of the original cave system, allowing visitors to explore these extraordinary artworks without the risk of damaging the fragile originals. The immersive experience includes advanced multimedia displays and interactive exhibits, giving insights into the cave’s discovery, the artistic techniques of the ancient creators, and the cultural context in which they lived.

Beyond the cave replica, Lascaux IV features an exhibition hall with artifacts, films, and scientific explanations, providing a deeper understanding of the paintings and their significance. You will learn about the conservation efforts, the research conducted on the cave’s artwork, and the scientific tools used to study the pigments and methods of prehistoric artists.

Day 6 – Museums and Caves

Today we begin with a visit to the Musée National de Préhistoire in Les Eyzies-de-Tayac, located in the heart of the Dordogne region of southwestern France, is one of the most significant prehistoric museums in Europe. Set in a stunning landscape of cliffs and caves, the museum is dedicated to the prehistoric era and showcases the rich history of early humans who once inhabited the area. The museum's collections span more than 500,000 years of history, featuring remarkable artifacts from the Paleolithic, Mesolithic, and Neolithic periods.

Our next stop will be the Les Combarelles Cave, one of the most important prehistoric sites in the Vézère Valley of southwestern France, renowned for its remarkable cave paintings. Located near the village of Les Eyzies-de-Tayac, this limestone cave was discovered in 1901 and is famed for its intricate engravings, believed to date back to the Upper Paleolithic period, around 12,000 years ago. The cave is especially significant because of the wide range of animal motifs that adorn its walls—such as bison, horses, and reindeer— carved with exceptional detail and skill. These engravings provide vital insights into the symbolic and artistic practices of early humans.

And finally, just a short distance from Les Combarelles, Font-de-Gaume is another iconic prehistoric cave, renowned for its stunning polychrome (multi-colored) paintings, which are among the last examples of such artwork open to the public. The paintings are believed to be around 17,000 years old, and they offer a captivating glimpse into the artistic expression of early humans during the Magdalenian period.

Day 7 – St. Émilion and Les Eyzies

Nestled in the heart of the Bordeaux wine region, the medieval village of Saint-Émilion offers a captivating experience with its narrow cobblestone streets and ancient stone buildings. As you stroll through this UNESCO World Heritage site, you'll discover the town’s rich history, dating back to Roman times, and its deep connection to winemaking. Explore the charming town square, lined with cafes and boutique shops, and visit the stunning Monolithic Church, carved entirely from limestone. The church's underground crypt and vast, subterranean galleries offer a glimpse into the town's architectural marvels. Along the way, enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding vineyards, which have made Saint-Émilion one of the most famous wine-producing regions in the world.

Moderate: Short to medium walks over occasionally uneven or hilly terrain. TravelQuest guests must be able to get on and off buses on their own, keep up with the pace of the trip, and be prepared to occasionally carry their own luggage. August is one of the hottest months in central Spain. The daytime temperature on average is 31°C (88°F) with hotter days ranging from 35°C (95°F) to 40°C (104°F). Travelers should be prepared for long Mediterranean days, followed by late and leisurely Spanish dinners, traditionally not beginning until after 9:00 pm.

  • Cancellations made between December 19, 2025 and February 27, 2026 will incur a $3,800 per person fee

TRAVELER HEALTH
